It has been more than a decade since Jimmy Buffett has performed live in the Charleston area, despite having a large and faithful following there.

Buffett last played North Charleston Coliseum on Feb. 26, 1997. Since then the singer has used the Coliseum to rehearse for other tours, but those performances were not open to the general public.

Buffett has been known to visit the Lowcountry even when he isn't touring, and has been seen booking charter fishing trips or picking up supplies for his seaplane at local stores.

Unseasonably warm weather made it all the easier for fans to tailgate Thursday in the coliseum's parking lot, which was awash in rainbow of Hawaiian shirts and tropical drinks. Once inside, the crowd was an impressive variety of demographics: everyone from baby boomers who, like Buffett, now qualify for retirement (Buffett turned 65 Christmas Day), to those folk's grandchildren, and every age in between. Apparently when it comes to enjoying a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" or discussing the finer points of a pencil-thin mustache, age knows no bounds.

Charleston was the third stop on the 2012 leg of the Welcome to Fin Land Tour. When Buffett first took to the stage with his Coral Reefer Band, the cheers of the crowd were deafening. The musician settled into an agreeable mix of mostly classic Buffett songs, coupled with a few newer tunes.

Most of the time the crowd appeared to be singing along word for word, especially on time-honored hits such as "Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit" and "Come Monday."

The artist and his band continued to roll through crowd favorites, such as "Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes" and "Volcano."

"Why Don't We Get Drunk" and "Margaritaville" found the sold-out audience once again singing along with every lyric.

Given the warm reception that he received, it might not take another 15 years for Buffett to return as a performer.
