Post Concert Review: Jimmy Buffett delivers paradise to Jacksonville crowd

Jimmy Buffett’s music is the tonic that allows his fans to reclaim their youth, even if it is just for a few hours. Bouncing beach balls, loud flowered shirts, the mass consumption of fruity cocktails all made Tuesday night’s concert in Veterans Memorial Arena a frat party for the over-50 set.

Buffett’s fans are a cruise crowd. The sort that might get upset if the bartender fails to garnish their Mai Tai with a paper umbrella. His music provides the inspiration to chuck the necktie, toss back beer with reckless abandon and forget the worries of the day.

While much of rock music is about searching — for love or that perfect place — Buffett has found paradise and wants to share it with all of his fans. Buffett made a career selling an attitude as much as he did selling records.

His show was two hours of fun. His nine-piece band plus two back up singers provided a wave of sound on which Buffett, dressed in an A1A T-shirt and board shorts, easily rode. No stranger to these parts in his youth, Buffett sprinkled in regional references throughout the show making sure to mention the Tradewinds Lounge in St. Augustine where he performed before becoming a star. After “Grapefruit — Juicy Fruit” he even struck the Tebow pose saying, “Tim’s a Parrot Head. I’m the devil in his life.”

Buffett was generous with the stage when he teamed early with Mac McAnally to sing “It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere.” The country hit was a perfect crossover for this crowd that likes their songs with an easy to sing chorus.

The show included all of the hits and each one was given its due. He sang “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” as if it was a new release. The party song “Volcano” was immediately followed by the crowd favorite “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” By this time sitting down wasn’t an option for many in the nearly sold-out crowd.

The 28-song set took a more mellow pace when Buffett left the stage for a song to allow his audience to catch its breath, reload at the bar or unload in the restrooms. He returned to perform “Knee Deep” and “Havana Daydreamin’.” He signaled that rest time was over when he performed the bawdy “Why Don’t We Get Drunk.” He even reworked the lyrics for youngsters in the house singing, “Why Don’t They Serve Lunch in School.”
Fans appreciated the hits “Margaritaville,” “Last Mango in Paris,” and “Son of a Son of a Sailor” sung in succession. He closed out the main portion of the show with “Southern Cross.”

The encore included “Brown Eyed Girl” and a favorite party song, “Fins.”
Jimmy Buffett has earned his loyal following by never failing on his promise to entertain and inspire fans to continue to dream of finding a paradise of their own.
