Jimmy Buffett's empire expands to include Miami stadium

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville empire continues to expand and now has its own home stadium. On Friday, the Miami Dolphins announced that Dolphin Stadium will be renamed LandShark Stadium as part of a new business venture with the singer/songwriter. LandShark Lager is an Anheuser-Busch brew licensed under Buffett’s Margaritaville brand. Buffett is a longtime friend of Stephen Ross, the Dolphins owner, who purchased the team last year.

The stadium's name change will only last through the end of the upcoming NFL Season. Besides, the Doplhins, LandShark stadium is also the home to the Florida Marlins and the University of Miami football team. However, the deal does not include naming rights for the venue for the Super Bowl or Pro Bowl games which will be held at the stadium next year. Reports also indicate that Buffett, who is believed to be interested in a minority share ownership of the team, will pay for the deal by playing shows at the stadium at little or no cost.

“What a cool thing to be doing and especially at home in South Florida,” said Buffett in a press release. “I am honored and look forward to working (not that hard) with the Dolphin organization. I just want to thank Steve for having the idea to think a little out of the box and including us in his vision of more fun for the fans. All I can add is, Let the Fin begin!”

At Friday's announcement, Buffett helped unveil the new stadium name and logo after a brief performance for a select group of Dolphin fans and Parrot Heads. To mark the occasion, he also re-worked his classic song "Fins" as a tribute to the team (get the lyrics here and watch the performance here).

Buffet will be in Massachusetts for shows at the Comcast Center on June 25 and 27, while the New England Patriots will travel to LandShark Stadium on December 6.
