What you need

Seedless grapes - about 1.5 lbs washed, dried and pulled off the stems

Rum - flavored rums are nice and you need about 1.5 to 2 cups
One empty 2 liter soda bottle that has been washed
Dry ice - 2 or 3 chunks about as big as dice

What you do

Put the grapes in the bottle. If they are big ones you'll have to cut them up. The bottle should end up one half to three quarters full. Pour in the rum. Add the dry ice. Put the cap on tightly. Put the bottle outside under a towel. Check it in a few minutes to make sure there isn't too much pressure. You might have to crack the lid a little to release some pressure. Hopefully not because the more pressure the fizzier the fruit will be. After about twenty minutes you can put it in the fridge until you are ready to serve. I have never had a bottle explode but I always start it off outside just in case. Bad enough to lose my fruit concoction without having to also wash it off my fridge and its contents.


As the dry ice vaporizes it releases carbonation. Since it is trapped in the bottle the alcohol and carbonation permeate the fruit.


This is also good with fresh strawberries. Other kinds of alcohol could be used. I did not care for oranges in it.

Be careful handling dry ice! Be safe.
